Student Support

Research proves that students learn best when their academic, emotional, physical, and social needs are met. Annie Wright is dedicated to educating the whole child and works to provide a healthy, safe and supportive environment so that our students can be engaged and challenged learners.

Learning Support

The IB Primary Years Program (PYP) and our Learning Support helps remove barriers to learning, including learning differences, language challenges, and cultural diversity. We recognize that every student learns differently and tailor support to meet each child’s unique needs.

We take a holistic approach, working with students, teachers, and families to create an environment where learners can thrive. Academic goals are balanced with social-emotional growth, and teachers receive guidance on strategies to make learning accessible for all.

Family collaboration and, when needed, outside support like occupational therapy ensure each student has the tools to succeed. By working as a team, we help every learner reach their full potential.
Annie Wright Schools offer accommodations for students to help ensure that each individual has an opportunity to learn and to demonstrate that learning has occurred. Here are some examples of the types of accommodations offered in the different divisions:

  • Counseling & Emotional Support

At Annie Wright School, Counseling and Learning Support work together to support students holistically. Our counseling approach combines classroom guidance, small group work, and individual sessions to meet each child’s needs.

Counselors provide brief, solution-focused support, as well as responsive help for immediate emotional challenges. Students are equipped with skills in emotional regulation, conflict resolution, mental health awareness, and bully prevention.

In the Lower School, our counselors are embedded in classrooms, making support highly accessible. Emotional well-being is prioritized alongside academics, and there is no stigma – students are encouraged to seek help and support one another.
  • Early Intervention & Developmental Considerations

At Annie Wright School, the Lower School supports students across all developmental stages, from early childhood to pre-adolescence. Early intervention is a priority, addressing speech, motor, and academic needs as soon as they arise.

Our Learning Support program carefully distinguishes between developmental differences and learning challenges to provide the right support. Families work alongside a team of educators to understand each child’s strengths, needs, and growth opportunities.
  • Systems of Support & Interventions

Annie Wright School uses a tiered intervention system to address academic and social-emotional needs. Teachers begin with general accommodations and strategies, guided by checklists, before referring students for additional support.

For students who need more structured help, Individual Accommodation Plans (IAPs) provide personalized interventions. Our Pre-Referral Intervention Manual guides teachers through early support steps, and a data-tracking system monitors progress to ensure interventions are effective and decisions are informed.

Health Center

The Health Center has two registered nurses who provide basic health care and education to our AWS community. The nurses promote a healthy school environment, attend to injuries and illness, provide care to students with chronic health conditions, administer medications, direct the immunization program, perform general health screenings, oversee the first aid emergency protocols and coordinate referrals to healthcare providers. Our nurses strive to be a source of guidance and education to help our students realize their full potential.
